Libya Conflict Demands Data Recovery Solution

Libya Conflict Demands Data Recovery Solution

Anyone who has experienced the failure of a hard drive will appreciate the urgent need for the services of a data recovery specialist. However a recent situation in war-torn Libya demanded an even swifter and more efficient solution than usual from the engineers and data recovery experts involved.

Zerowait, a data recovery specialist, was called into action by a Texan oil company whose data came under threat when fighting broke out at an oil field in Libya. The company's engineer was needed to secure data held on a vulnerable NetApp storage system at the site, and quickly backed up all the information onto tape. He then smuggled the tapes out of the area and despatched it to Data Strategies International, based in Houston.

The company then set about using hard disk recovery techniques to reconstruct the original data from the tapes, providing the client with all the information in a manageable file format for storage on a secure server. "Zerowait prepared a unit which was shipped to DSI headquarters in Houston where it was met by one of our engineers," explained David Benner, engineering manager at Zerowait.

"He installed the DSI provided tape drive on the system, and having previously set up the environment to match that of the system in Libya, was able to rebuild the data structure on the NetApp, which then allowed the DSI technicians to recover the data on the tapes and create a data set they could provide to the customer."

The company credited the engineer's ability to carry out the data recovery plan in such hostile conditions and highlighted the need for swift and effective data recovery for a successful outcome.
